Bold Women
This photograph is part of a series that portrays cultural leaders from the Caribbean diaspora, a kind of companion to Blur nearby. Sandra Brewster honors the contributions of deceased public figures such as journalist Claudia Jones (1915–1964). A Trinidad-born American who fought for world peace, women’s rights, and Caribbean independence, Jones worked as a poet and editor of the West Indian Gazette, living in Harlem, New York, for thirty years before her deportation to London in 1955.
