Archive Label 2003: This work is an abstract response to a photograph of Navajo life taken by Elizabeth Compton Hegemann. On a physical level, the piece was created by first leaving the canvas outdoors where rain and soot fell on it. After this, the artist applied a grid of colored lines by snapping across the surface a carpenter’s chalkline dipped in powdered pigment. Lastly, the entire canvas was submerged in acrylic resin. Metal staples, wood chips, and small pieces of dirt suspended within the resin stuck to the canvas, which then dried to an uneven high gloss.
