Roth’s drawings fall into a tradition of symbolic or allegorical self-portraits. Artists in past centuries frequently portrayed themselves and their patrons in “historiated” portraits, where the sitter would be displayed in the guise of an historical figure. Here, Roth presents himself as a mythological figure, but does so in an abstract manner so that the images are symbolic rather than representational portraits.
