Debut

Snuff is a kind of ground or powered tobacco inhaled through the nose. It was originally imported to China from Europe in the 16th century. In the Qing dynasty, snuff became a popular luxury and a remedy for common illnesses. Snuff bottles showcased various techniques with different materials, such as glass, ceramic, lacquerware, wood, jade, ivory, and precious metals. The material and decoration of snuff bottles demonstrated the tastes and wealth of their owners.

Snuff bottles are usually pocket-sized for everyday use. However, this glass bottle is quite large, which indicates it was used for storing larger quantities of snuff in the home. This painting technique is called inner-painting, a special method invented in China. The artist would paint or write in reverse with hook-shaped bamboo brushes inside the bottle. Although painted on a curved wall, the flowers, leaves, and birds are vividly depicted.
