Archive Label 2003: Alfred Leslie turned from abstraction to realist figuration in the early 1960s to produce large-scale, theatrically lighted subjects. He “works big” to underscore his belief in the public nature of his paintings, an approach that carries over into his drawings, such as this intimate glimpse of the artist in his studio. Also interested in cinematic scale, Leslie has made movies with poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Frank O’Hara.
