This handscroll of haiku poems and light-hearted sketches was created by the poet Socho while staying at the temple Zenko-ji in Nagano prefecture. Socho may have painted this travel record as a gift in return for accommodations he received. Like the great poet Matsuo Basho- (see hanging scroll in this exhibition), Socho composed haiku poems to celebrate his visits to famous sites. Here he has interspersed narrative passages with his own poetry, occasionally adding abbreviated pictures. The resulting visual images are concentrated and suggestive, making this an outstanding example of the union of painting, poetry, and calligraphy.
