One of the most astonishing tributes to Dürer appeared at the hands of Alfred Jarry, the rebellious French playwright and author of Ubu Roi. Jarry spent his meager inheritance publishing a lavish journal dedicated to the graphic arts, Perhinderion (the Breton word for “pilgrimage”). Perhinderion was largely composed of French folk prints and reproductions of Dürer’s woodcuts.
