A onetime straduate student of Dr. Chu-tsing Li, Kwan S. Wong earned a master's degree in art history at the University of Kansas. Wong now works as an expert on Chinese painting at Sotheby's auction house in Hong Kong, painting on his own time in the respected tradition of Chinese amateur artists. Bamboo is a traditional subject matter in Chinese ink painting, one that allows the artist to show his or her skill with the brush through modulating the rhythm, thickness and density of the brush strokes used to depict its leaves and branches. Best known for his calligraphy, Wong has written an inscription in semi-cursive script to the left of the painting:

The dark green rock retains the colors of antiquity, and the bamboo assumes the character of a lofty gentleman. In company they never tire of each and together endure the cold years.
