Iron kettles (kama) like this one were used to heat water for tea, and came in a wide variety of styles. Once the water has simmered, the lid is taken off the kettle and placed on a lid rest (futaoki) like the one included elsewhere in this exhibition. The lid rest protects the floor from damage.
