The Power and Pleasure of Possessions in Korean Painted Screens

Chaekgeori screens with blue backgrounds grew in popularity in late 19th-century Joseon Korea, eventually replacing the more traditional screens with brown backgrounds. One reason may have been that blue mineral pigment imported mainly from Europe and available in China became increasingly affordable. In this screen, objects rather than books dominate the shelves, demonstrating a shift toward the consumption of imported, precious objects.
