The Power and Pleasure of Possessions in Korean Painted Screens

Each panel of this chaekgeori depicts multiple stacks of books housed in colorful brocade, elegantly displayed with accessories and other objects related to the scholarly lifestyle such as brushes and ink stones. Flowers representing each season are portrayed: plum blossoms for winter, magnolias for spring, lotuses for summer, and chrysanthemums for autumn. Although the colorful pigments
have lost their brightness, originally they must have created a pleasant contrast with the shimmering black lacquer background.
