Narratives of the Soul

Dorothy I. Height was a civil rights and women’s rights activist who served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. In a statement released after Height’s death in 2010, President Obama said that Height was “the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to so many Americans.”
