1653: Indentured servants and enslaved African and Native American workers are forced to build a 12-foot- high wall across Manhattan Island to protect the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (now New York City) from English invasion—and to separate white landowners from indigenous residents and slaves. The site where the wall stands will later be known as Wall Street, a district famous for financial transactions.
