And Still We Rise

1770: Crispus Attucks, an escaped slave with African and Native American ancestry, joins a group of approximately 50 dockworkers and seamen who gather on March 5 to protest the presence of British troops in Boston. He is the first of five men shot and killed by British soldiers in an incident that will be known as the Boston Massacre. Attucks is the first colonist to die for American independence. The entire quilt represents a medal, complete with ribbons and stars. It honors the bravery of African Americans who paid the price for freedom since the beginning of the nation.
