And Still We Rise

1866: Congress authorizes the creation of four all–African American regiments in the United States Army. Two cavalry regiments, the 9th and 10th, and two infantry regiments, the 24th and 25th, will become the only units in which African American soldiers can serve until the Spanish- American War. The soldiers in these units will be known informally as Buffalo Soldiers, a name that may have come from Native Americans.
