1939: Hattie McDaniel is the first African American actor to be nominated for an Academy Award, which she wins in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her role in Gone with the Wind. No other African American actor will be awarded an Oscar until Sidney Poitier wins in 1964, and the next African American woman to win will be Whoopi Goldberg in 1991.
