And Still We Rise

1953: Malcolm X becomes an assistant minister of the Nation of Islam. A Black Nationalist and separatist movement, the Nation of Islam contends that only Blacks can resolve the problems of Blacks. Over the next several years, Malcolm X’s influence will increase until he is one of the two most powerful members of the Black Muslims, alongside leader Elijah Muhammad. This quilt celebrates the love that Malcolm X shared with his wife, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and the strength they built together, as well as the six daughters they had (represented in red dresses).
