1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson appoints Thurgood Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court, making him the first African American justice. As a civil rights attorney earlier in his career, Marshall had been a major force in the efforts of the NAACP to eliminate race-based segregation in U.S. schools.
