1972: On January 25, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm announces her candidacy for president of the United States. Already the first African American woman elected to U.S. Congress, Chisholm becomes the first woman to run for the Democratic nomination for president and the first major-party African American candidate for president. Although she will not win the presidential nomination, she will retain her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms.
