2008: On November 4, Democratic candidate Barack Obama defeats Republican candidate John McCain and becomes the first African American person to be elected president of the United States. Obama will be elected for a second presidential term in 2012. The Ascension celebrates the addition of President Barack Obama to a long line of cultural figures who have contributed to African American history.
