And Still We Rise

1922: Already known for his invention of a protective safety hood that aided in the rescue of 24 workers trapped in the aftermath of a 1916 underground natural gas explosion, Garrett Augustus Morgan invents a three-way automated traffic signal. With only six years of formal education, Morgan will be a lifelong innovator and entrepreneur. This quilt references many of Morgan’s creations, from his first invention, a belt fastener for sewing machines, to his friction drive clutch for cars.
