And Still We Rise

1923: A mob of white men destroys the African American town of Rosewood, Florida, in the first week of January. Five Rosewood residents and two mob members are killed, and almost all of the structures in the town are burned to the ground. Survivors hide in the woods and swamps surrounding Rosewood for several days, until they are evacuated by car or train to larger towns. No one will ever return to live in the town. In 1994, the state of Florida will award $150,000 in damages to each of nine survivors. In 2010, a state scholarship for descendants of families that survived will be established.
