Exhibition Label: "Corpus," Apr-2012, Kris Ercums The attribution of this delicate terracotta bust is based on two initials “PM” found on the base. Elected to the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1763, Pierre Mérard created a number of commissioned busts for the upper crust of French society, including a wax medallion for Louis XV. The hairstyle of this work suggests that it was made on the eve of the French Revolution (1789-1799). Archive Label 1999: The attribution of this terracotta bust to Mérard, a pupil of Edme Bouchardon, is based on the initials "PM" faintly incised on the drapery. Besides terracotta and marble busts, Mérard created wax medallions, including one of Louis XV. The subject is unidentified, but his hairstyle suggests a date no later than the start of the French Revolution in 1789.
