Threads of History: Textiles from the Spencer Museum of Art

In a double-weave coverlet two warps are joined so that the front and reverse sides are mirror images. As in this example, the back would be a light design on a dark ground, so often this side was displayed during the warm months. The turnback allows a view of the front side. It shows a dark design on a light ground, more often displayed in cooler weather. For this reason, these bedcoverings are sometimes called "Summer and Winter" coverlets.
