Event description

How do museums display and “still” works of art meant for movement? Risham Majeed, assistant professor of art history at Ithaca College and specialist of historical arts of Africa in tandem with medieval art in western Europe, will discuss themes of movement, the object artificially stilled, and ornament as a device for othering in conjunction with the exhibition “Race, Gender, and the ‘Decorative’ in 20th-century African Art: Reimagining Boundaries.” She will also chronicle the primitivist reception of nomadic architecture from World's Fairs to seminal exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art.
