Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawing 519 in Context; Making Sense of Modern Art from Abstract Expressionism to Conceptualism

Taught by KU Professor of Art History David Cateforis with an introduction by Museum Director Saralyn Reece Hardy, this immersive introductory course demystifies modern art, exploring major movements that emerged in post-World War II America, from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism. Starting with the Museum’s recently acquired Wall Drawing 519 by preeminent conceptual artist Sol LeWitt, and studying works by Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Donald Judd, James Turrell, and Wenda Gu, the class examines the path to conceptual art, the radical changes these artists brought about, and their lasting impact on the art of today.
