This sampler is similar in format to those produced in the New England colonies from 1650 until 1750. Moral verse and the tedious repetition of alphabets point to a Massachusetts origin. Such work was common there during the early 18th century. J's and U's were often omitted from these early samplers. American samplers bearing crowns are unusual save when the maker had not been long in the colonies.
