Archive Label Sept-May 1993:
This print is one of a comic series in which Hiroshige juxtaposed human figures with their silhouetes projected on a shoji panel or paper door in the adjacent section. Such visual humor was a common feature of Japanese arts of the Edo period (1600-1868) in general, and of woodblock prints in particular.
Hiroshige's interest in the shape, contour, and silhouette of objects was not only of interest to Japanese artists; such concerns are also evident in the slightly later work of French artists who emulated Japanese art.
