Bold Women
In this staged portrait, using makeup and photoshop, artist Stacey Tyrell poses as both “mistress” and “slave.” The contrast of the two women she portrays calls attention to the ways people perform their identities and urges us to consider the implied power dynamics. The artist explores the complex hybridities of race and histories of the Caribbean Diaspora in relation to structures of power like capitalism, colonialism, and race as a social construct.
