This print is probably a panel o fa polyptych that would have included actors in other roles from the same play. Kabuki actors, portrayed onstage and off, were the mainstay of Toyokuni's print production. The origins of the mannered poses and vivid coloration tha ttypify the work of Toyokuni's students, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada, can be seen here.
