Archive Label 1999: Griffith completed this pastel two years after leaving his faculty position at KU to take up residence in Laguna Beach, a well-known artists' colony, where the painter was drawn to the infinite geographical variety the landscape possessed. Admired for his exquisite pastels, Griffith was also credited with inventing his own chalk formula that proved more durable than the traditional medium. The unique properties of pastel-bright color and quick, direct application -allowed Griffith to explore further his love of light, also seen in his oil painting, Dry Pasture.
