Mills’s Venetian scene shows the Grand Canal, the gondolas that glide across its surface, and the ancient palazzi that line its banks. The large structure to the left in the background is the Palazzo Balbi; the campanile of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari rises above its rooftop to the right. The sixteenth-century Palazzo Balbi is attributed to the famous Venetian architect and sculptor Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608).
