Archive Label date unknown: The Tōkaidō (Eastern Sea Route) was the main road connecting the capital of Edo (present day Tokyo) with Kyoto. The route was heavily traveled by messengers, pilgrims, and merchants as well as by long retinues of feudal lords. Woodblock prints showing scenes of the road's 53 stations became popular in the nineteenth century, the most celebrated series of which was designed by Hiroshige in 1834. The enormous popularity of Hiroshige's series spawned many variations of the theme. In 1854, Hiroshige collaborated with Kunisada, an artist known for his figure prints, to produce a series of Tōkaidō prints. Hiroshige designed the landscapes and Kunisada designed the figures. In one of the prints from the series (left), a woman dressed in traveling robes and a sedge hat pauses at the Fujikawa station while her servant adjusts her sandal. In the right print, Hiroshige's landscape depicts Mount Fuji behind Kunisada's portrait of the monk Saigyō (1118-1190), the poet-wanderer who is contemplating the grandeur of the famous mountain.
