Exhibition Label: "Venice Observed," Dec-1980, Elizabeth Broun and Yolanda de Estrada The delicate arcade traceries of the Ca' d'Oro are refined and elaborated from similar motifs found in the Ducal Palace. Some of the decorative motifs on this palace, such as the cable carvings surrounding the windows, were originally highlighted in gold--giving the building its name Ca' d'Oro or "House of Gold." The decorative effects of light and shade are important to the Venetian aesthetic, and the photographer emphasized this contrast with his direct, frontal approach.
