Exhibition Label: "Venice Observed," Dec-1980, Elizabeth Broun and Yolanda de Estrada Unlike the painter or the etcher, the photographer of the 1870s could not work from a moving gondola. Furthermore, he had to carry much heavy equipment to prepare and develop the collodion negatives on the site, for the entire process had to be completed within an hour. The collodion negative was overly sensitive to blue light, so all skies appear to be blank through over-exposure. To add interest to the skies, Salviati has consciously sought interesting architectural silhouettes. In other cases, the photographs have been cropped at the top so the sky is almost eliminated.
