Bold Women
By using beadwork and other Lakota materials and symbols on the surface of her works, Dyani White Hawk rearranges the hierarchy of art history. This work asserts the vital role of Lakota abstraction on equal footing with the dominant history of Euro-American abstract forms. The central hourglass shape is a Lakota symbol called kapemni, representing a mirroring between earth and spirit and ideas of connection and balance. In They Gifted (Night), the bands of color refer to Native ribbon skirts.
