Exhibition Label: "Cabinets of Curiosity: Musing About Collections," Jun-2006, Joseph Keehn and Madeline Rislow This portrait shows the collector Abraham van Lennep (1627-1678) surrounded by some of his prized possessions: an album of prints or drawings, an illuminated manuscript (probably fifteenth century), a plaster bust of the Roman philosopher Seneca (4 BCE-65 CE), and a drawing extending over the edge of the table. In the painting by Caspar Netscher (Paris, Stichting Custodia, Institut Néerlandais) it is possible to discern that the drawing is in red chalk and that its subject is the biblical story of Adam and Eve.
