Exhibition Label: "Site Specifics,” Aug-2010, Susan Earle This fanciful image superimposes a cutout image of fabricated sculpture onto a color photograph. Eldred called these works “imaginary graphics.” These photographs were often culled from Arizona Highways magazine. In this humorous construction, the artist has turned an imaginary sculpture on its end. Created in 1968, this work is part of a trend called Earth Works or Earth Art that was generated in the United States and elsewhere between about 1965 and 1975. Famous earth works include Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty of 1970, a huge rocky mound in the shape of a spiral placed at sea level in the Great Salt Lake in Utah (pictured here).
