Exhibition Label: “Transformations,” Feb-2006, Mary Dusenbury and Alison Miller Clothing has the potential to free people from their traditional roles. In this photograph, Pearl Magley appears to be playing with alternative identities, or experimenting with women’s roles. Taken at a time when a woman’s place in society was changing quickly, the idea of loose fitting, exotic clothing had a certain appeal to a Western woman - liberated not long before from tight corsets, and still struggling against rigidly defined roles in society.
