Didactic – Art Minute
Episode 229. I’m David Cateforis with another Art Minute from the Spencer Museum of Art. An untitled work by the American artist Donald Judd exemplifies Minimalism, a movement of the 1960s that employed simple geometric forms to challenge traditional means of creating and appreciating art. "Untitled" comprises ten identical boxes arranged vertically on the wall at regularly spaced intervals, reaching an overall height of ten feet. Each box consists of a stainless steel rectangular frame with translucent orange plexiglass on the top and bottom sides. The precise geometry, crisp corners, and perfectly flat surfaces indicate that the work was manufactured rather than made by hand. Light reflecting on the steel and penetrating through the plexiglass enlivens the work and creates a dialogue between the cool stainless steel and the warm surrounding orange glow. Like other Minimalists, Judd aimed to produce an entirely objective artwork, devoid of hidden meaning or symbolism, creating an immediate impact through its simple purity of forms and materials and its elegant clarity of arrangement. With thanks to Mindy Besaw for her text, from the Spencer Museum of Art, I’m David Cateforis.
