Archive Label: Weston has cropped out the model’s head from this photograph to emphasize her body, which he then has rendered with the clinical detachment of modernism. Through these means Weston denies the subjectivity of his female model: he seems to have no desire to depict his model as a specific individual, full of desires and wishes of her own. Rather, he has rendered the female body here as a means of proving his own artistic virtuosity.
