In this quilt, bright silks have been pieced together to create 81 folding fans set against a black velvet background, while embroidered flowers and branches frame the edges. These were all popular decorative techniques in Victorian times, and the fan motif also occurred regularly throughout the period. Folding fans like the ones depicted in silk here were frequently imported from Japan or China, and formed a crucial part of a young lady’s party dress.
