Archive Label: Although Carolus-Duran was a fashionable portraitist in his day, he is best known in this country as the teacher of the American Impressionist, John Singer Sargent, whose portrait of Mrs. Curtis you can see on the wall to the right. In this small depiction of a sunset, Carolus-Duran’s loose brushwork captures the sense of a fleeting moment. As in the Monet to your left, this sketchy quality draws attention to the surface and thus to the two-dimensionality of this work. His use of broad sweeping brushstrokes and searing yellows in the sky creates a startling effect that underscores nature’s grandeur, a subject that captivated both artists and patrons for its nostalgic appeal to a preindustrial past.
