Exhibition Label: "Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Sherman The Théâtre Libre commissioned Ibels to produce a series of eight program during their 1892-3 season. Ibels planned these lithograph posters to showcase his style and skill composing designs, with no regard for connecting the narrative of the advertised play to the image shown with the performance information. This programme was the last in the series, depicting well-to-do gentlemen at their leisure alongside the program for three plays, “La Bell au bois rêvant” [Dreaming Beauty], “Mariage d’argent” [Moneyed Marriage], and “Ahasvère” [Ahasuerus]. The artist’s economy of line and simplicity of shapes and colors complement compositional devices such as dramatic diagonals that slash across the the picture rather than resolving into a system of linear perspective.
