Foundling

The Steerage was taken during Stieglitz’s journey from the United States to Paris by ship. While he was standing on the firstclass deck, he was captivated by the shapes and compositions in the steerage passengers’ space below. Although Stieglitz never intended to document the history of immigrants, these
photographs capture two profound moments of anonymous travelers in the first decade of the 20th century when many people were immigrating to the United States.
