Exhibition Label: “Selecciones: Mexican Art from the Collection,” Nov-2005, Kate Meyer This dog may refer to Siqueiros’s mural Memorial a Cuahthemoc, in which Spanish soldiers clad in metal armor appear ready to attack Aztec peoples with both their weaponry and a similarly snarling canine. In this light, the dog’s role as a guardian may be seen as an ironic reminder of the violence that often occurs in the name of peace. The vicious beast may also suggest Siqueiros’s political leanings toward the necessity of militant action to inspire revolutionary change.
