Archive Label 2003: Lucas van Leyden was one of Dürer’s few real peers in northern-European printmaking. Lucas and Dürer knew one another by reputation early in their careers and influenced one another in subtle ways. When they actually met in the Flemish city of Antwerp in 1521 they seem to have had much to share. On that occasion Dürer drew Lucas’ portrait in silverpoint and traded some of his prints for a complete set of Lucas’ engravings. Lucas’ later engravings, such as that exhibited here, owe something to Dürer in the refinement of linear systems used to describe detailed forms and textures.
