Archive Label 2003 and 1999: In 1873, Mary Cassatt decided to settle permanently in France. Her work at that time can be divided into two categories: canvases completed for exhibition in Paris and less ambitious works painted on panel to sell to dealers. Although untraced to any Parisian dealer, The Scottish Nurse exemplifies the latter classification. In contrast to Cassatt’s more finished paintings, The Scottish Nurse is a spontaneous study concentrating on the head of the figure, the surrounding areas briefly suggested by broad brush strokes of color.
