Exhibition Label: "A Kansas Arts Sampler," Oct-2004, Kate Meyer Though Kansas was initially slow to organize and build state highways, or even to pave local roads, today it has the fourth largest number of public road miles in the nation. While the state highway system comprises only 7% of the roads in Kansas, these thoroughfares and city connecting links carry 53% of total travel in and across the state.
