Kōseki was a member of a group of conservative Kyoto Nanga artists who chose to model their works after orthodox Chinese literati masters. Kōseki's use of extensive dotting in the manner of Shen Chou (1427-1509) to suggest texture on the trees and snow-covered slopes, has been melded here with his own rough, abbreviated brush manner. Through the use of curving lines and circular forms he has captured the undulating rhythm of nature in flux.
